Charlie always gave his birth year as 1909, but after studying census records from May 1910 (in which he did not appear) and January 1920 (in which he was listed as age 8), I believe he was actually born in 1911. This means he was only 16 years old when he began his recording career, backing up Rosie Mae Moore, Tommy Johnson and Ishman Bracey in a two-day session. Later that year, he played and sang on the very first recording of "Corrina, Corrina" with Bo Chatmon and Walter Vincson.
