I knew Burse was Will Shade's right hand man, but didn't realize the breadth of his contributions until I undertook to complete the personnel listings for every Memphis Jug Band recording. Through that project, I learned that his guitar work was the most sophisticated of any band member, his tenor guitar riffs crackled with energy, and his vocal contributions were significant before and after his remarkable metamorphosis as a singer in the early 1930s.
